8. Term Paper: Legal Constraints for International Journalists

Legal Restraints on Journalist and Media around the world helps me to appreciate the freedom of speech here in America

When it comes to international journalism issues, I felt somewhat uneducated on the topic. I didn't realize it's as widely practiced around the world or that the consequences of not adhering to legal restraints were so drastic. After taking a deeper look into this I've found several recent examples of how different countries are still censoring information that should be readily available to everyone, especially in the age of technology.

In America I think we take for granted the freedoms we have to access and share information quickly without fear of facing criminal charges, being locked up or even being killed.

For this term paper I am sharing a few journalist from the around the world who have been under fire for their opinions and work reporting the news in their countries.

Morocco- A journalist of 13 years, Hanane Bakour's faces trial for a Facebook post, she is being accused of “publishing fake news by using electronic means that harm private life". In her Facebook post she criticized a local election by the ruling party Heba Morayf. Morocco is very intolerant of criticism of their political system. In 2022 alone Moroccan authorities have investigated, prosecuted and imprisoned at least seven journalist and activists for speaking out online about the government. Amnesty.org

Greece- Journalist Giorgos Papachristos physically attacked and injured by businessman Yiannis Karagiorgis, in Aug 2023 this journalist working for the newspaper TA NAE, is attacked by business and shipowner during a football game at Athens Olympic Stadium. Although many witnesses account seeing the attack, because of the social standing of Karagoiorgis has not been charged in connection to the crime. Papachristos had written critical reports on the business activities of Karagoiorgis.

Apparently this is a really big problem in Greece, violence against reporters. There is also an unsolved murder of crime reporter Giorgios Karaivaz. In most cases of violent acts against journalist in Greece goes unpunished. Article19.org

Lebanon- A journalist is killed from Israeli military attack, on Oct 13, 2023. His name is Issam Abdallah and he worked for Reuters reporting the Gaza war. It is believed this was a deliberate attack on journalists, as there were other journalist injured as well, including several Al Jazeera staff members. It's important to have journalist there to report and document the war but it's been extremely dangerous as the Israeli army targets the media. Since the Gaza war started on October 7th, 63 journalist have been killed, mostly all Palestinian, as demonstrated in the graphic below. AlJazeera.com

These are just a few of the many articles I found when searching 'international journalist in danger' or 'restraints on journalism around the world'. This is something that is a global problem that we should try to be more educated on.

I never thought that among the most dangerous careers that journalist, or news reporter would be on the list. According to this article from Reuters Institute 2022 was the deadliest year for journalists in two decades, with Mexico and Haiti leading the count.

Fortunately there are resources, news agencies and committees dedicated to help protect journalism around the world because it is so important to keep the news and important information honest, safe and available. https://cpj.org/ https://www.amnesty.org/en/about-us/
